Christian Purpose Entities
To compile the list of “Christian Purpose Entities” 24,494 registered charities were assessed against a list of keywords. This provided us with a list of 3213 church entities (noting that an entity may contain more than one church), 1037 para church organisations and 237 Christian administration/resourcing entities.

About the Report
The Faith in Action report is the culmination of a combined effort from eight project partners who have supported this piece of work. Each of these organisations serve the Christian church and parachurch sectors and daily see the impact of their mahi on our society. There is strong alignment of this group to showcase the work of this sector and to encourage those at the coalface.
The Report stemmed from the development of the “Christian Landscape Database”, developed in 2023 by Gemelli Consulting in conjunction with the Wilberforce Foundation and Christian Savings.
Registered charities in New Zealand are legally required to upload an Annual Report to the New Zealand Charities Services each year capturing 160 individual data points on each registered charity. Data on all of New Zealand’s 28,000 registered charities was downloaded. Those with a Christian purpose were identified through a range of filters being applied to the ‘Name’ and ‘Charitable Purpose’ data points. After identifying these charities, a further filter was applied to differentiate between church and parachurch entities. The data was then cleaned to improve accuracy and reliability.
This database includes submissions from 2014 – 2023 and has been collated and analysed to inform this report.
